Martin Amidu Petitions For Current Special Prosecutor ‘s Removal

Sources indicate that President Akufo-Addo has referred a petition to the Chief Justice asking for Kissi Agyabeng to be removed from her role as Special Prosecutor.

On April 30, 2024, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu sent the appeal to the President, who then forwarded it to Justice Gertrude Torkonoo on May 6, 2024.

Mr. Amidu makes accusations of abuses involving judges and the administration of justice, as well as procurement violations in the purchase of cars for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Additional claims include infringements on people’ rights via erroneous staff nominations to the office, arrests and detentions, and information access violations.

According to information obtained by Joy News, the Chief Justice is currently considering whether there is sufficient evidence to form an impeachment committee for Mr. Agyabeng, as required by Article 146 of the Constitution.

According to sources, this might have something to do with the Special Prosecutor’s controversial press conference, where he claimed judges were plotting against him.

Former Attorney General Martin Amidu claims that Special Prosecutor Mr. Agyabeng’s press conference complaints about the judiciary amount to judge abuse and damage the Judiciary’s reputation.

This impeachment process began after reports that the Special Prosecutor refused to resign and instead held a press conference to voice his frustrations.

Amidu also accuses the Special Prosecutor of abusing rights by arresting individuals like Cecilia Dapaah and Prof. Frimpong Boateng.

Additionally, he alleges a breach of the right to information when Agyabeng requested appointment letters and salary details of all OSP staff on a pen drive and raised concerns about staff appointments in the office.
