Mobile money transactions hit GH¢354.1bn in August despite slight dip

Mobile money transactions in Ghana reached GH¢354.1 billion in August 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The figure, though marginally lower than the GH¢355.4 billion recorded in July, reflects the sustained dominance of mobile payments in Ghana’s financial sector.

Data from the central bank showed that the number of mobile money transactions increased to 831 million in August, up from 778 million in the previous month. Registered mobile money accounts rose to 77.7 million, with 25.1 million classified as active.

The Bank of Ghana further disclosed that the number of registered mobile money agents stood at 938,000, of which 433,000 were active. Analysts say the growth in transaction volumes, alongside rising account activity, demonstrates growing confidence in digital financial services as a tool for payments, remittances, and business operations.

Mobile money interoperability also gained ground, with transaction values climbing to GH¢4.9 billion in August, supported by 26.4 million cross-network transfers.

Despite macroeconomic challenges, including currency fluctuations and fiscal pressures, the central bank noted that mobile money continues to drive financial inclusion, expand employment opportunities, and improve tax revenue collection.

According to the BoG, the surge in mobile-based payments has also helped reduce risks associated with cash transactions while expanding access to credit through mobile lending platforms.

The report reaffirmed mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s transition towards a cash-lite economy, underscoring its position as the backbone of the country’s digital financial ecosystem.
