Mohammed Abdul-Salam appointed acting NLA boss

Mohammed Abdul-Salam has been named the Acting Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), effective January 15, 2025.

His appointment comes with the mandate to oversee and manage the operations of the authority.

In a statement from the Office of the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama announced the decision, citing constitutional and statutory provisions:

“In accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722), His Excellency the President has appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority, pending the Constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.”

Prior to his appointment, Abdul-Salam served as the Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region.

Background
On January 13, 2025, Sammy Awuku announced his resignation as Director-General of the NLA. In a letter addressed to President Mahama, Awuku explained that his decision was due to his election as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North.

Awuku’s resignation brings an end to his tenure, which began in August 2021. In his letter, he expressed his commitment to focusing on his new parliamentary duties:

“In light of this new responsibility, I wish to dedicate my efforts to serving as a Member of Parliament,” he wrote.

He further urged the President to appoint a replacement promptly to ensure a smooth transition and seamless handover of responsibilities at the NLA.
