MP for Upper West Akim donates sanitary pads to Adeiso PRESEC

In commemoration of this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim, Emmanuel Drah, donated sanitary pads to the students of the Adeiso Presbyterian Senior High School.

He presented 100 boxes of sanitary pads, packs of water and soft drinks and a cash donation to the students and the teaching staff of the school.

Other basic schools within the district also benefitted from similar presentations.

He said the items were to support the students and to ensure that they do not miss classes due to their inability to afford sanitary pads during menstruation.

Stigma

Mr Drah encouraged the students not to allow menstrual poverty to be a hindrance to their education and urged them to fight all odds and menstruation stigma.

He said menstruation was a natural process and the students should not be ashamed during that period and advised the boys to be supportive of their female colleagues and not to tease them when they inadvertently soil themselves.

He assured the students of the National Democratic Congress government’s commitment to implement the free sanitary pads policy to ensure that all girls in secondary schools throughout the country have access to free sanitary pads during their time in school.

Prior to the presentation, the students were educated on menstrual hygiene and the need for them, particularly the girls, to observe proper menstrual hygiene in order to keep themselves safe and avoid infections that could have dire consequences on their health.
