Mustapha Abdul-Hamid denies knowledge of alleged NPA embezzlement probe, pledges cooperation

Former Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has denied receiving any official communication regarding an alleged investigation into the embezzlement of GH₵1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF).

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Abdul-Hamid responded to reports that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had launched an inquiry into the alleged financial mismanagement during his tenure. He stated that he had not been invited by any investigative body nor been made aware of any probe into his activities.

“My attention has been drawn to an announcement by the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, that I am under investigations for some alleged embezzlement of funds at the Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF) during my tenure as the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority,” he wrote.

However, he assured the public of his willingness to cooperate with any investigations regarding the matter.

This follows an official statement from the OSP, which announced the commencement of investigations into suspected financial irregularities at the UPPF, an NPA-managed fund meant to stabilize petroleum prices across the country. The probe reportedly involves over GH₵1.3 billion in alleged embezzled funds.

The OSP has not yet disclosed the individuals targeted in the investigation, but sources suggest that former and current NPA officials, as well as private sector players involved in petroleum distribution, may be under scrutiny.

Abdul-Hamid, who led the NPA from 2021 until his recent departure, has reiterated his readiness to assist the investigation.
