Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam disclosed that, as of June this year, Ghana’s central government debt reached GH¢742 billion (US$50.9 billion), which is 70.6% of the GDP.
Presenting the 2024 mid-year budget review in parliament on Tuesday, Dr. Adam noted that this represents a 22.0% increase due to cedi depreciation and ongoing disbursements from creditors.
He added that the total debt comprises GH¢452.0 billion in external debt and GH¢290.0 billion in domestic debt, making up 60.9% and 39.1% of the total debt stock, respectively.
“As a percentage of GDP, external and domestic debt represented 43.0 percent and 27.6 percent, respectively.”
