As it gets ready for the 2024 general elections, the National Peace Council has emphasized how urgently it needs more resources.
The Chairman of the Council, Reverend Dr. Adu Gyamfi, emphasized that the current workload has taxed their resources to the limit, making it more difficult for them to perform vital duties.
Dr. Gyamfi emphasized that the Council needs more funding in order to effectively manage election-related operations, citing the many issues that are pending that call for attention.
To be more precise, he said that about $1 million is needed to support their ability to get ready for and handle any problems that may arise during the elections.
Among its many duties, the National Peace Council is essential in maintaining a peaceful election process, arbitrating disputes, and encouraging communication between political parties.
However, the Peace Council currently lacks the substantial financial and personnel resources required to oversee elections and mitigate violence, despite the growing demands for these services.
During a cross-party discussion on reducing election violence, Rev. Adu Gyamfi brought attention to the fact that some of their regional secretaries are overburdened with work.
He said:
“I think we need more funds; we need more staff; our regional secretaries are complaining that they are overburdened and are asking that we give them drivers which we don’t have now. There is the need for more resources and more personnel to do the work because the work is increasing,”
