Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the national chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly warned that intimidation against the party’s supporters in Kyebi, the Abuakwa South seat, will no longer be tolerated.
On Monday, September 2, Asiedu Nketia addressed voters in Akyem Adukrom, Abuakwa South, as part of his “retail campaign” tour of the Eastern Region. He emphasized the various forms of intimidation and attacks the NDC has experienced before, during, and after elections in the area in previous polls, calling these actions undemocratic and at odds with the legacy of J.B. Danquah, a significant figure in Ghana’s multi-party democracy.
He mentioned particular instances, including as the 1996 attack and destruction of the NDC constituency office in Kyebi.
In J.B. Danquah’s hometown, Mr. Asiedu Nketia questioned the community’s adherence to democratic ideals, implying that the multi-party democracy Danquah supported was not being upheld.
He pledged that the NDC would not tolerate intimidation in the constituency any longer and issued a dire warning, saying the party would do whatever it took to safeguard its interests.
The NDC Chairman refuted the idea that Abuakwa South is a bastion of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) by highlighting the fact that the seat has been won by both the NDC and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the past.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia earlier attacked the Zongo Development Fund and the Ministry for Inner Cities and Zongo Development in Begoro Zongo in the Fanteakwa North constituency, calling them dishonest programs meant to deceive Zongo communities.
