NIA Board Throws Out Petition Seeking Removal of Prof. Attafuah
The NIA Board has turned down a request from the Public Services Workers Union, TUC, to remove Professor Kenneth Attafuah, the Executive Secretary.
Earlier, on July 1, nearly a thousand NIA staff members petitioned the President to dismiss him. They claimed he violated labor laws and Ghana’s public service policies, mismanaged SSNIT regulations, and showed unfairness in recruitment practices.
The Governing Board, however, stated in a statement on July 5 that the workers’ complaint did not accurately reflect the Executive Secretary’s commitment to her position. The statement emphasized that the petition was therefore unjustified.
Portions of the statement reads:
“The Governing Board wishes to express its complete confidence in the Executive Secretary’s integrity, competence, experience and resourcefulness in the performance of his duties, including the advancement of the interests of NIA workers and roundly describes the petition as baseless and unwarranted,”
“As stated by the National Labour Commission (NLC) at a hearing on Wednesday, 3rd July 2024 into ongoing negotiations between Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (MSC) and the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), the NIA Division of the PSWU (NIA PSWU) has no right to petition His Excellency the President to remove the Executive Secretary without exhausting internal procedures; the NLC declared the conduct of the NIA PSWU as both “illegal and completely out of line,”
In the meanwhile, the Board urged the staff to have a little more faith in the leadership since it was dedicated to making sure that their concerns were taken seriously.
