NUGS to Gov’t: Address Issues of Scholarship Students Abroad

The government has been urged to take immediate action to allay the worries of Ghanaian students receiving government scholarships overseas by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

This comes after Moroccan scholarship recipients protested over the more than 10-month wait for the distribution of their stipends.

They claim that the circumstance has made already difficult circumstances—such as not being able to purchase food and sanitary products—even worse.

During a press conference on Wednesday, May 29, NUGS President Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel reaffirmed the union’s resolve to pursuing the matter.

He emphasized the challenges that students confront not just in Morocco but also in the UK, India, and other countries where the Students Loan Trust Fund is used.

Mr. Kyeremeh emphasized the need of having enough money to support education, especially in light of the growing number of students enrolling in postsecondary education programs as a result of the free senior high school policy.

What he said:

“We are very perturbed by the current happenings but we are pretty much sure this listening government is going to take a quick step toward solving this particular challenge. Our students are suffering in Morocco, our students are suffering in the UK, our students are suffering in India, and most of the students on the Students Loan Trust Fund are also suffering. We need funds to facilitate education. Free senior high school is churning out a lot of numbers who are in our tertiary institutions.”

“The only way to keep them going, for them to also get knowledge to develop our country is to get them proper funding to keep them going.

“The Students Loan Trust Fund is one key area that should be looked at. We are calling on the government and all agencies to come and rescue students in the country.”
