Only two genders exist, gov’t will renew expired Anti-Gay Bill – Mahama

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his stance on same-sex marriage, stating that he believes only two genders exist—male and female.

Speaking to the clergy on Friday, February 28, Mahama emphasized that his Christian faith shapes his views on family and marriage. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that these values are reflected in Ghanaian law.

“As a Christian, I uphold the principle that only two genders exist—male and female—and that marriage is solely between a man and a woman,” he stated.

His remarks come amid ongoing debates on gender identity and the legal recognition of same-sex relationships in Ghana.

Mahama also addressed the status of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, a proposed law aimed at reinforcing traditional family values. He revealed that he had engaged with the Speaker of Parliament on renewing the bill, which had expired at the end of the previous parliamentary session.

“I have spoken with the Speaker to ensure that the renewal of the expired Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is introduced as a government bill rather than through a private member’s motion,” he said.

He further expressed optimism that these consultations would lead to the reintroduction of a revised version of the bill, with the government taking a leading role in its passage.
