Outrage As UGMC Doctor Blocks Police From Questioning Salifu Amoako’s Son
The families of the two young girls who perished in the East Legon disaster involving Bishop Salifu Amoako’s son are overcome with grief and disappointment.
On Tuesday, a medical officer at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) who was caring for 16-year-old Elrad Salifu Amoako stopped the police from questioning him.
The youngster has been released, despite the medical officer’s allegation that he was unfit.
Since the action seems to be a conscious attempt to stop the police from pursuing justice for the families of the deceased, it has raised suspicions and concerns among all parties involved in the case.
A family member of one of the victims bemoaned in an interview:
“It is unbelievable and shocking that a doctor will go ahead to discharge the boy from the hospital after undergoing all the various processes of healthcare and yet that same doctor has written a note to the Police saying the boy cannot be interrogated by the Police until he the same doctor says so.
“How is this fair to the families who are going through this difficult times? Why is the doctor bent on preventing the police from doing their work,”
A UGMC staff who also spoke on condition of anonymity said:
“This is very strange, the boy is looking strong and in good shape so we cannot understand why Dr Fred Salawu appears to be shielding him from the police.
“It appears Dr Salawu is being motivated by something else because this is very strange. It is just not fair to the girls who died and their families. Will this special treatment be extended to every person or it is because his father has money and influence”.
According to sources, the police are dissatisfied with the medical officer’s stance because the doctor is impeding all attempts to question the suspect.
However, Ghanaian police officials are continuing to monitor the suspect until the medical professional deems him competent to meet with the police.
Two 12-year-old girls lost their lives in the accident that caused such a great deal of public outrage because Elrad crashed into their automobile, causing it to catch fire.
