Parliament to Probe Black Stars’ 2023 AFCON Performance

Kobena Mensah Woyome, a member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, announced that Parliament will initiate an investigation into the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the recently concluded 2023 AFCON. Ghana faced an early elimination from the tournament, finishing last in Group B with only two points while under the management of then-head coach Chris Hughton. The Black Stars’ AFCON journey commenced with defeats against Cape Verde, followed by 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique.

In response to the team’s performance, Mr. Woyome announced plans for a public hearing to delve into the factors behind the poor showing at AFCON 2023.

“There will be a public inquiry into the Black Stars’ performance,” he confirmed in an interview with Akoma FM. Following the disappointment, Chris Hughton, who was on a 21-month contract, lost his job.

Otto Addo succeeded him resulting in losses and draws against Nigeria and Uganda.

The Stars aim to recover as they gear up to face Mali and the CAR in the World Cup qualifiers.

The 2026 World Cup, to take place in Canada, Mexico, and United Sates of America, marks the first time in history that the tournament will be jointly hosted by three nations. This edition will feature an expanded format with 48 teams competing, offering more opportunities for countries to participate. It promises to be a celebration of football’s global appeal, diverse cultures and showcasing the sport on a larger scale across North America.
