Police Probe Damaging Of Akufo-Addo Statue At Effia Nkwanta
The vandalism to the statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Sekondi, Western Region, has prompted the Ghana Police Service to open an investigation.
A significant, wide hole was found at the rear of one of the statue’s legs on Monday, December 16, 2024. It is still unknown if the damage resulted from a construction flaw or was intentional—caused by persons who opposed the statue.
During his tour of the area prior to the general elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo erected the statue at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.
The statue was built to commemorate a number of significant regional projects that were started under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, such as the renovation of Takoradi Market Circle, the building of the three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, according to Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah.
In a statement released Monday, the police said that their first investigations had shown that the statue’s left leg was broken and that its plaque had been taken off.
The police also stated that they were making every effort to find and capture the individuals who committed this mischief.
The public was reassured by the police that measures are being taken to restore the statue to its original condition and bring the criminals to justice.
