President Akufo-Addo Opens 250-Bed Ashanti Regional Hospital In Sewua

On Saturday, January 4, 2025, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially opened the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital and a 50-bed Infectious Disease Center at Sewua, which is located in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

After the newly finished Afari Military Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sewua will rank third in size in the Ashanti area. The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s second-largest referral center after Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, is anticipated to have less strain as a result of the hospital.

The facility, which is currently the largest regional hospital in the nation, works as a vital lifeline for the region, filling in gaps in healthcare delivery and guaranteeing that residents have unhindered access to universal health coverage and improved health outcomes. It also houses the 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre, one of 12 facilities constructed nationwide to manage infectious diseases with COVID-19 funding.

An administration block, outpatient department, physiotherapy, gynecology wards, sterilization, intensive care unit, maternity and delivery suites, laboratory, pharmacy, theater complex, laundry, and a medical gas plant for the production of medical gases are all fully furnished in this state-of-the-art medical facility.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor started nine hospital projects in Europe in 2008, and this project is one of them.

Overall, President Akufo-Addo has finished seven of these nine hospitals, which were previously abandoned after the Kufuor government ended in 2009.

The 500-bed Afari Military Hospital in Kumasi, the 160-bed Wa Regional Hospital, the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sewua, and the 100-bed Ga East Municipal Hospital in Kwabenya are the nine Euroget Hospitals.

The project also includes the five 60-bed hospitals in Tepa, Konongo, Twifo Praso, and Madina.

President Akufo-Addo gave the workers, local chiefs, and residents the task of making sure that the facility’s and its equipment’s rigorous maintenance procedures are followed.

Nana Kwaku Amankwaa Sarkodie, the Chief of Sewua, expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for seeing to it that the project started by their son, former President J.A. Kufuor, was finished.

He thanked the administration for appointing Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, both of whom are native to the region.
