President sets up fund for victims’ children

Mahama: ‘You are not alone’ — President sets up fund for victims’ children

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate establishment of a Children’s Support Fund to safeguard the future of the children of the eight victims of the tragic August 6 helicopter crash.

Speaking at the state funeral for the fallen heroes today in Accra, the President said the government would make an initial seed contribution and would operationalise and publish a detailed framework for the fund within the next 30 days.

The fund is designed to provide comprehensive support to the affected children, covering education from primary to tertiary levels; healthcare, including medical insurance and specialised care where required; and welfare support such as clothing, shelter, and essential living expenses.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank for opening an account with an initial contribution of GH¢500,000.

“My office will ensure that the Children’s Support Fund is sustained for the long term, with annual public reporting on how it has been used,” he said.

He further noted that the government would create channels for contributions from citizens, corporate organisations, professional associations, and international partners.

“Imagine the impact it will have on each of these children, who have been left behind by the death of their parents, to be told by the adults of this nation, through our contributions, just like Omane told Setor: ‘You are not alone. You’ve got me. Always there to share,’” President Mahama added.
