Govt to establish 2 universities in Bono East — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by the government to establish Technical University and University of Health and Life Sciences in the Bono East Region.

He explained that the proposed Technical University would be established in Techiman, the regional capital and the University of Health and Life Sciences built at Kintampo.

The President was speaking at Kintampo on Thursday as part of his one-day “thank you” tour aimed at appreciating the chiefs and people of the region for their votes and support during the 2024 general elections which gave him the victory.

“We are working closely with the Bono East Coordinating Council, the Lands Commission and the Techiman Traditional Council to establish a Technical University in Techiman, a site has already been selected at Oforikrom in addition to that, plans are underway for the establishment of the University of Health and Life Sciences here in Kintampo”.
Industrial growth

He said technical education was essential for industrial growth and job creation and “with these institutions, we aim to bridge the skills gap and create opportunities for the youth of the region.”

President Mahama said his vision for all inclusive education would target the completion of all abandoned E-blocks and the absorption of first year admission fees for all students entering public tertiary institutions, including the establishment of the two universities in the region.

“My visit today is one of gratitude, reflection and a renewed commitment to duty. I returned to my in-laws’ region, to say thank you to you for your overwhelming support in the 2024 general elections.

“You stood strongly behind me. You voted for the reset agenda, you voted for truth, you voted for unity and development. Today I have returned with a solemn promise that I will not betray your trust and faith in me”.

President Mahama said good governance had led the fast stabilising of the Cedi with inflation also declining gradually.

“Today I’m pleased to report to you from Kintampo in the Bono East Region that, our currency the Cedi is stabilising,” he said.

President Mahama said investors had gained confidence in the economy and were returning, while Ghanaians were beginning to feel a slow but steady relief when they go to the markets.

He reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance and equitable development, explaining that the “Big Push” agenda bing implemented by this government would make sure that the region got its fair share.

On roads, President Mahama pledged to prioritise infrastructure in the region by constructing and reconstructing more roads.

He said Techiman as the regional capital was among key cities to benefit from the construction of new ring roads.

“We are focusing on roads that are more essential and critical for agricultural trade and access to essential services,” he said.

He said the government had targeted the Asueyi-Mesidan road, Offuman-Wenchi road, Sunyani-Nkoranza road and Atebubu -Kajaji road, among others.

He said when the roads were completed, it would open up the region, improve market access for farmers and reduce travel time for transport cost.

President Mahama also expressed his commitment to redesign and construct the Techiman outer ring road since it was a major transit point on the N10 highway to open up the proposed 54 kilometers outer ring road.

He said the Department of Urban Roads had initiated engineering services and design works to prepare the way for full construction to begin.

“This will help decongest the Central business district of Techiman and enhance road safety for residents and travelers alike,” he said.

Commended

The President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Owusu Sakyi, commended President Mahama for his exceptional leadership.

He thanked the President for promising and assuring them of establishing two public universities in the region to ensure easy access to higher education.

Nana Owusu Sakyi, who is the Paramount Chief of Basa praised the Mahama-led administration for its performance in the financial sector particularly on the area of exchange rate.

“The dollar is now GH¢11 which is unprecedented. I believe by June July, it will reduce to GH¢9,” he said.
