Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea Appointed As GHS Director-General

Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has been named the next Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) by President John Dramani Mahama, replacing Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye.

Significant progress has been made in bolstering the health sector under Dr. Kuma-Aboagye’s leadership, particularly during the COVID-19 epidemic.

With the implementation of mass testing, vigorous contact tracing, and prompt policy responses, Ghana emerged as one of Africa’s most proactive countries in pandemic management under Dr. Kuma-Aboagye’s direction. Because of his efforts, the region’s fatality rate is among the lowest.

He gained acclaim both domestically and abroad by leading revolutionary changes that addressed family planning, nutrition, and mother and child health after the pandemic.

His tenure was distinguished by his dedication to the welfare of healthcare workers, the implementation of policies to enhance their working conditions, and his receipt of awards such as the Ghana CEO Summit’s Best Public Healthcare CEO. After that, there was international recognition in the form of honors like the Korean Prime Minister’s Citation.

During his handover ceremony, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasized teamwork, thanked his colleagues, and asked them to assist Prof. Akoriyea.

The appointment of Prof. Akoriyea ushers in a new age, with great hopes for further advancement of Ghana’s healthcare system on the solid basis established by Dr. Kuma-Aboagye.
