Prof. Yankah Honored With Emeritus Professor Position At Ashesi
In honor of his significant contributions to academia, linguistics, and higher education, Ashesi University has named Prof. Kwesi Yankah, a distinguished scholar, public thinker, and academic administrator, an Emeritus Professor.
Having held prominent posts and left a significant academic legacy, Prof. Yankah has widespread respect in both national and international educational circles. Throughout her career, Prof. Yankah has held important leadership positions in a variety of responsibilities.
In addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Ghana in Legon, where he specialized in ethnography of communication, he served as Ghana’s Minister of State for Tertiary Education, Vice Chancellor of Central University, and Pro Vice-Chancellor.
In addition, he served as Associate Director of the American Council for Learned Societies’ African Humanities Program.
Several esteemed universities, including Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, and Indiana University, have hosted Prof. Yankah as a visiting professor. His views and influence have transcended national boundaries, benefiting educators and students throughout.

The African Association for Rhetoric recognized him early this year for his outstanding contribution to African rhetoric studies. He has also received recognition for his exceptional academics from Indiana University (IU), where he completed his doctoral studies.
At the University of Media, Arts, and Communication, which was formed by the merging of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Ghana Institute of Languages, and National Film and Television Institute, Prof. Yankah is currently the Chairman of the Governing Council.
Professor Yankah holds international fellowships from the American Folklore Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. His two most recent works are The Pen at Risk: Spilling my Little Beans (2023) and Beyond the Political Spider: Critical Issues in African Humani@es (2021). His most recent book, Proudly Ghanaian: Our Gold Still Gliters, is about to be released.
The fact that Prof. Yankah has been appointed Emeritus Professor at Ashesi University demonstrates his dedication to education and humanities research throughout his life, as well as his willingness to continue mentoring students and aspiring academics.
