Put aside politics, support 24-Hour Economy - Akuapem North PM to citizenry

The Presiding Member (PM) of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, Asiedu Ofei, has called on Ghanaians to put aside partisan differences and support the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative launched by President John Mahama last Thursday.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic on the sidelines at the Akuapem Diaspora Engagement at Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, Mr Ofei emphasised that the programme has a good vision for the country’s growth and development.

The event, held last Friday, was under the auspices of the Akuapemhene Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, on the theme: “Celebrating Akuapem Heritage”.

Politics

Mr Ofei, who is also an entrepreneur and a businessman, urged Ghanaians to look beyond politics and support the initiative, saying that some industries in the country, such as Akosombo Textiles Limited and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, already operate on a 24-hour basis.

“Let us put politics aside and do the needful by supporting the vision and the idea.

I know that in politics, what is good for one party may not be good for the other but beyond politics, let us be real and be mindful of the fact that our image as a country is at stake in terms of our growth and development,” he stressed.

The new initiative, he said, will add value to the existing practice and boost the economy.

Success

Mr Ofei encouraged Ghanaians to pray for the success of the initiative, rather than focusing on the amount of money invested. He cited the construction of the Akosombo Dam as an example of a project that was initially met with scepticism but has since yielded numerous benefits.

He expressed hope that the 24-Hour Economy will similarly bring benefits to the country, making the investment worthwhile.
