Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on party members and supporters to remain calm, resolute, and law-abiding in the face of what he describes as escalating political intimidation.
His appeal comes in the wake of an attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee. The operation was reportedly carried out by individuals believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Following the incident, Dr. Bawumia visited the MP and described him as being in “high spirit and undaunted” despite the raid on his residence. He praised Reverend Fordjour’s courage and resilience in the face of what he termed an unfortunate abuse of power.
Addressing NPP supporters, Dr. Bawumia stated:
“I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding during this period of unfortunate political persecution.”
He reaffirmed the NPP’s unwavering commitment to democratic values, the rule of law, and peaceful political engagement—even amid provocation. Dr. Bawumia also issued a strong call to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to ensure that security institutions are not used as instruments of political oppression.
“The security agencies of our country must not be reduced to political tools to harass and intimidate perceived opponents. Such actions undermine our democracy and will not be accepted by the Ghanaian people,” he stressed.
Describing the conduct of the security personnel as a “descent into lawlessness and fear,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized the urgent need for professionalism, accountability, and respect for civil liberties within Ghana’s security services.
He concluded by reassuring members of the NPP and the general public that the party will continue to stand firm in defense of democracy, justice, and the rights of all citizens.
