Britain’s Dan Evans set up a meeting with top seed and world number two Carlos Alcaraz as he advanced at the Shanghai Masters.
Evans went through to the last 32 after qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan retired with the Briton 6-2 3-0 ahead.
The match had been held over from Saturday because of heavy rain.
Evans’ fellow Briton Cameron Norrie was beaten in a third-set tie-break by American JJ Wolf.
Norrie, the 15th seed, led 3-6 7-5 3-2 with a break when Saturday’s rain forced the players off court.
On the resumption on Sunday, Norrie served for the match at 5-4 but was broken by the world number 51, who went on to force a tie-break which he took 7-4 to reach the last 32.
Defending champion and US Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev also suffered a surprise exit, losing 7-6 (10-8) 6-2 to American Sebastian Korda.
World number nine Casper Ruud progressed with a 6-4 6-2 win over American Christopher Eubanks but 13th seed Frances Tiafoe fell 2-6 6-2 6-3 to Lorenzo Sonego.
