Sheikh Shaibu Applauds Bawumia ‘s Firm Position on LGBTQ+

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, has praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his stance to the contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He noted that both the Islamic and Christian communities are in unison in their opposition to the practice of LGBTQ+. Therefore, he expressed satisfaction that a leader had taken a definitive stance on the matter.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ The Pulse on April 11, Sheikh Shaibu emphasized the unity within the Muslim community and its willingness to collaborate when important issues arise. He highlighted the alignment of views between Muslims and Christians on matters concerning LGBTQ+ rights.

What he said:

“The subject at the center of this LGBTQ issue and the bill that has been accepted in Parliament is our concern. It is about the survival of the family, which is the family we seek to protect, and in this particular issue, both Muslims and Christians are one. We are on the same page.

“So, we would seek to collaborate with the Christian community, having analysed the situation very well, and if we come to agreement, I mean, we could go hand in hand with the Christian community in order to seek an audience with the President to understand why the delay; whether it is a technical issue or whether, in spite of the fact that the issue is at court, the President could have received the bill on his table and agreed to it”.

“I think that the President should not allow this opportunity to slip by, and I support any inter-faith collaboration to put pressure on the President to assent to the bill and develop it into law.

“I think that we are ready to work together. As I speak, I speak confidently on behalf of the Chief Iman because, in the spirit, mindset and philosophy of the Chief Imam, I believe strongly in my conviction that it is something that the Chief Iman would be prepared to support us to do,” he said.

Following the New Patriotic Party flagbearer’s address to thousands of Muslims in Kumasi during the Eid prayers on Thursday, where he voiced his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu echoed similar sentiments. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the influence of religion and morality to urge President Akufo-Addo to endorse the anti-LGBTQ bill into law, thereby safeguarding the family system in Ghana.

Sheikh Shaibu underscored that endorsing the bill would not diminish President Akufo-Addo’s standing; rather, it would establish a positive legacy, ensuring the preservation of Ghana’s traditions, beliefs, and culture. He talked about the significance of political leaders entrusted to uphold the country’s values.

In alignment with the NPP flagbearer’s stance, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu highlighted the necessity of prioritizing the protection of Ghana’s cultural and moral fabric, urging President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action by signing the anti-LGBTQ bill into law.
