South Dayi Member of Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has advised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to endorse the Anti-LGBTQI+ bill whenever he assumes the role of acting President. Dafeamekpor, who has filed a case to compel President Akufo-Addo to sign the controversial bill, believes that Bawumia’s action will clarify his stance on homosexuality.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dafeamekpor made the suggestion while sharing a video in which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer openly expressed his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities. He contends that Bawumia’s decision to assent to the bill while acting as President would serve as a litmus test for his stance on the matter.
“In this video, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, our Veep, is heard and seen saying that by our cultural ethos and his Muslim beliefs, he is against LGBTQ+. Fantastic.
“I expect our Veep to sign the Bill into law when next the Prez travels and he acts as the Head of State. That’s all,” he wrote.
Speaking to a large congregation of Muslims at the Kumasi central Mosque during the Eid prayers on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his inability to support a practice that contradicts both his religion and the values of Ghana.
This marks Dr. Bawumia’s initial public statement on the matter, following numerous requests for him to clarify his stance on the controversial issue.
In response, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for firmly opposing the contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He highlighted that both the Islamic and Christian communities are in agreement regarding their disapproval of LGBTQ+ practices, expressing satisfaction that a leader has taken a decisive stance on the matter.
