President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will provide free sanitary pads to female students from Primary 5 to Senior High School (SHS), starting in March 2025.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address today, February 27, 2025, the president emphasized that the initiative aims to reduce absenteeism among girls, ensuring they stay in school during their menstrual cycles.
Under the policy, students from Primary to Junior High School (JHS) will receive seven packs per term, while SHS students will get seven packs per semester.
“This initiative is a crucial step toward promoting gender equality in education. Many young girls miss school due to lack of access to sanitary products, and we must address this challenge to secure their future,” President Mahama stated.
The policy has been widely praised by education stakeholders and advocacy groups, who have long called for government intervention in menstrual health support. The Information Services Department (ISD) has confirmed the rollout and assured that relevant agencies will ensure a smooth implementation.
