
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the recent assault on JoyNews journalist, Mr. Latif Iddrisu.
According to a statement issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the arrest was made on June 7, 2025, following ongoing investigations into the incident which occurred during a political protest on May 27, 2025.
Mr. Iddrisu was reportedly covering a demonstration held in front of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. The protest was staged by supporters and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including some Members of Parliament, in response to the arrest of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party.
While reporting from the scene, Mr. Iddrisu was allegedly confronted and assaulted by some demonstrators.
Police say they have arrested 55-year-old Theophilus Thompson at James Town in connection with the attack. Thompson is currently in custody and assisting with the investigation.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the assault.
The Accra Regional Police Command, in its statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, reiterated its commitment to safeguarding journalists and ensuring that all acts of violence against media practitioners are met with the full force of the law.
