Victor Asare Bampoe Appointed As New NHIA CEO

Dr. Da Costa Aboagye has been replaced as the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) new CEO by Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe.

As a seasoned medical professional and public health expert, Dr. Bampoe brings a plethora of knowledge to the position.

Dr. Bampoe has held a number of executive roles in international health organizations and was previously the Deputy Minister of Health.

As the NHIA looks to improve its offerings and increase coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), his appointment comes at a critical juncture.

Former Achimota School student Dr. Bampoe graduated with a medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and a master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in the United States.

Prior to becoming the Deputy Minister of Health under the Mahama administration in June 2014, he worked with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), representing nations like Nigeria and Kenya as the UNAIDS Country Director and Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat. He has experience working in both domestic and international healthcare institutions. He was a Senior Fund Portfolio Manager at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in Geneva, Switzerland. In a meeting with NHIA management and staff, Dr. Bampoe reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s healthcare system and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) health manifesto, which places a strong emphasis on universal health coverage.

In accordance with the 2024 NDC health agenda, Dr. Bampoe is expected to implement strategies to expand NHIS coverage, especially for vulnerable populations.
