VRA’s engineering expertise praised for handling of Akosombo Dam Spillage.
The President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, has applauded the Volta River Authority (VRA) for its engineering decisions during the recent controlled spill of the Akosombo Dam.
Ing. Bempong commended VRA’s efforts to balance preserving the dam’s integrity and preventing loss of life, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between VRA and the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GHIE) to ensure engineering decisions are based on facts and data.
Ing. Dr Kwame Boakye, a past president of GHIE, praised the engineering team at VRA, stating, “We have a fantastic engineering group, and it’s important for us to reassure the nation that engineering worked!” He further asserted that Ghana possesses some of the best engineering minds in the world.
High Court Judge Solomon Oppong-Twumasi also lauded VRA’s work, remarking, “I’ve been so impressed with the work VRA has done within this short period. When I was sitting here, I thought because I have no engineering background that was why I was so impressed, but when I looked around and saw the faces of the people gathered here I realised that ‘Ghana ye wo adze oye’’
VRA’s Chief Executive reiterated the organization’s commitment to restoring affected communities, stating, “I really mean it; we will put all our resources together, whatever we have to do, to get people back to where they were before.”
The VRA presented its preparedness plan and the rationale behind the controlled dam spill to over 300 engineers and associates at the Engineering Centre, Ghana Institution of Engineering.
