The Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Rudolf Amoako-Gyampah, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to throw their full support behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at Twifo Praso on Monday during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Central Region, the MP argued that replacing the former Vice President with a fresh candidate would be counterproductive, given the effort already invested in presenting him to the Ghanaian electorate.
“If we really want victory in 2028, then we have to push someone we have already marketed to Ghanaians, who had 41 per cent when we presented him for the first time,” Mr. Amoako-Gyampah said.
He cautioned that the NPP risked undermining its electoral chances if it abandoned Dr. Bawumia for an untested alternative. “If we drop such a person who has been marketed already and go in for unknown face, then as a party we are not serious for victory,” he stressed.
Drawing on political precedent, the MP reminded party faithful of the historical consistency shown by the NPP and other parties in maintaining confidence in candidates over multiple election cycles. He maintained that this approach would position the NPP strongly for 2028.
“My plea to all party stakeholders is that let us continue to have faith in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a humble man, blessed with vision and leadership qualities,” Mr. Amoako-Gyampah added.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025, is seeking to lead the NPP into the next presidential contest, following his unsuccessful bid in the 2024 elections.
