Gunmen attacked travellers at Wulugu in the North East Region, killing three people and burning a bus.
The victims were on their way from Kumasi to Garu when their bus broke down close to Wulugu. In order to find replacement parts, the driver left the trapped passengers behind and headed to Walewale.
When he wasn’t there, armed men broke in, burned down the bus, and killed three chosen passengers.
When police responded to a distress call, they found the remains of three young males, all of whom were thought to be in their 20s.
The third was discovered around 200 meters distant, and the other two were discovered by the side of the road, laying in a pool of blood.
While efforts to identify their relatives continue, the bodies have been taken to the morgue at Bolgatanga Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The third fatality, an Ashanti guy, was on his way to Bolgatanga, while the other two have been identified as Frafras.
Witnesses stated that when they heard gunfire, the passengers ran into the Wulugu settlement, but some of them were pursued by the attackers, which resulted in their deaths.
Four empty rounds thought to be from AK-47 rifles were recovered by police from the crime site. Passengers who sought shelter in neighboring homes are safe because authorities have guarded the area.
The attack’s motivation is yet unknown, however indications indicate it might have something to do with the ongoing Bawku war. 49 people have died as a result of this occurrence since the conflict resurfaced in October.
