Two miners were killed when a galamsey pit collapsed in the early hours of the morning in Kukubi, a town in the Kwaebibrem Municipal District.
The two miners were trapped when the pit they were working in collapsed, according to eyewitness testimonies.
Only the dead bodies were found, despite the desperate attempts of other miners.
Sadly, the first victim’s lower body was dismembered during the process of retrieving him with the help of an excavator.
After customary libation rites were conducted at the location, the second miner’s body was found a few hours later.
Since then, as investigations are ongoing, the police have moved the bodies to the mortuary.
The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by illicit mining operations, which continue to take lives in the area.
