2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Mali Fires Head Coach Eric Chelle

Eric Chelle was fired as head coach of Mali’s National Men’s Football Team after the team lost to Ghana and drew with Madagascar.

Mali suffered a 2-1 home loss to the Black Stars on June 6 and a goalless away draw against Madagascar on June 10, during which the host team played a substantial amount of minutes with 10 men.

Mali now sits fourth in Group I standings with five points, five points behind leaders Comoros. This is the time of his dismissal.

Mali and Central African Republic tied 1-1 in Bamako prior to Mali’s double header matchup against Ghana and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying round. The only team that advances straight to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 is the group winner.

Eric Chelle, a former professional footballer, served as the head coach of Mali’s national football team. Known for his defensive prowess during his playing career, Chelle transitioned into coaching, bringing his experience and strategic insights to the team.  Despite this setback, Chelle’s contributions to Malian football remain significant, highlighting both his dedication and the complexities of leading a national team in a competitive environment.
