NIA receives 700,000 blank cards to clear Ghana Card backlog

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has received 700,000 blank Ghana Cards to address the backlog of unprinted identification documents, a situation that has persisted since 2023. The blank cards arrived on Monday, February 17, 2025, following weeks of negotiations led by the Acting Executive Secretary of the NIA.

According to a press release from the authority, these cards will be used to print long-pending records, including first-time issuances, replacements, and updates of personal information. The move is part of the government’s broader objective to ensure that all Ghanaians aged 15 and above have access to the Ghana Card for identification and verification purposes.

To expedite the process, the NIA has constituted a technical team tasked with fast-tracking the printing of the backlog and overseeing its distribution to district offices nationwide. The public will be notified when the cards are ready for collection.

Additionally, the NIA reminded the public that more than 600,000 printed Ghana cards remain uncollected at various regional and district offices since 2018. Efforts are underway to develop a more efficient system for distributing these cards to their rightful owners.

The authority reassured Ghanaians of its commitment to executing its mandate efficiently and in the nation’s best interest.
