Sergio Aguero is to make a comeback to competitive football this summer, participating in the second edition of TST in North Carolina.
The renowned footballer from Argentina and Manchester City declared his retirement in December 2021 while under contract with Barcelona, following medical advice to end his playing career. Since then, the 35-year-old has been inactive in competitive football. However, he is primed for a significant comeback in June, confirming his participation in The Soccer Tournament, where he may compete against teams like Borussia Dortmund and Wrexham.
Manchester City has confirmed that Aguero will lead an ‘Agüero team’ for the 7-on-7, $1 million winner-take-all tournament. Currently, his teammates remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, TST’s leadership expressed delight in having him join, with founder and CEO Jon Mugar commenting, “He’s not only one of the best players in history but also one of the most competitive. He’s coming to Cary to enjoy and compete, which aligns perfectly with TST’s ethos.”
Throughout Aguero’s 18-year career, he netted an impressive 260 goals in 390 matches for City, setting a club record. His contributions played a significant role in securing five league titles for his team before his departure in 2021.
The roster of teams slated to participate in the 2024 tournament is beginning to form, featuring some notable names. Following the success of TST 2023, renowned figures like Aguero, etc have pledged their involvement in this year’s event. Enthusiasts of the new format eagerly anticipate the next announcements regarding confirmed participants for the competition.
