Manager Edin Terzic of Borussia Dortmund has exited after he requested that his contract be “terminated with immediate effect.”
Under Terzic, Dortmund advanced to the 2023–24 Champions League final, however they were defeated by Real Madrid at Wembley.
After “a joint discussion,” the German club announced that Terzic’s request had been granted.
Terizic stated:
“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline,” said Terzic, 41.
“Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions my fundamental feeling has not changed.
“I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon.”
Terzic started coaching at Dortmund’s academy from 2010 to 2013, then worked as assistant to Slaven Bilic at Besiktas and later at West Ham until 2017. He returned to Dortmund as assistant coach under Lucien Favre in 2018.
After Favre’s departure in 2020, Terzic became interim head coach and led Dortmund to victory in the German Cup final against RB Leipzig. He later served as the club’s technical director before being appointed manager in 2022.
Under his leadership, Dortmund finished as Bundesliga runners-up last season and secured a Champions League spot with a fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Terzic’s contributions, saying, “Edin Terzic has been exceptional at BVB, and we are all grateful to him. Edin and I will remain friends.”
