Axim Youth Protest Over Halted Stadium Project

The youth of Axim, which is in the Western Region’s Nzema-East Municipality, have given the President two weeks to open the recently built stadium in the community.

Promised to the community, the stadium has been sealed and abandoned for years, allowing its amenities, such as goalposts and VIP areas, to deteriorate.

The Axim Youth’s leader, Jonas Kwabutey, claimed during a protest that the stadium’s infrastructure had been allowed to deteriorate in an interview with Channel One News.

Thus, he has threatened to avenge himself by giving President Akufo-Addo till July 29th to step in.

Kwabutey further stated that Eric Essien, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), rejected a petition that was filed two months prior.

“They promised to construct a multipurpose sports stadium for us. As I’m talking now, if you enter the stadium, you can see that all the things are rotting. They have done the VVIP, they’ve mounted the goalpost, all the necessary facilities, they’ve done it but they’ve locked it and everything is rotting, so we are poised to demonstrate.”

“All we are telling them is this, we submitted our petition, which was two months ago, and the MCE didn’t call us, and he didn’t even show up. We wrote a request for a police escort, but they didn’t even mind us.

“The reason we are today is we are sending a signal to the government that the stadium, whether commissioned or not commissioned, must use it. And we have given up to 29 July, that’s the ultimatum.”

In response to the worries, MCE Eric Essien expressed regret for the deteriorating stadium but claimed he had spoken with the regional minister to persuade the contractor who had left the site due to unpaid work not to return by August.
