West Ham To Quit Betway Sponsorship Over Paqueta Betting Scandal

Betway is said to have contributed to Lucas Paqueta’s purported betting charges, therefore West Ham is apparently attempting to sever their relationship with the betting provider.

Due to suspected bet violations while he was a member of West Ham, Paqueta was placed on FA suspension in August of last year. In four Premier League games—against Leicester in 2022 and Aston Villa, Leeds, and Bournemouth in 2023—the Brazilian was accused of purposefully receiving bookings in order to raise money for friends. Since then, there have been rumors that Paqueta’s violations could result in a lifelong ban.

Betway, West Ham’s main sponsor, reported suspicious bets on Brazilian star Lucas Paqueta being booked, leading to spot-fixing charges. The club is unhappy that Betway went directly to integrity investigators without informing them, which may lead to ending their £10 million-a-year contract.

Due to a new government ban on gambling-related front-of-shirt advertisements, which goes into effect that summer, West Ham is already considering their alternatives for the 2026–2027 season. Although sponsorship agreements with gambling organizations will still be allowed, West Ham is unlikely to look into working with Betway on a sleeve sponsorship deal. Despite this, the club maintains that their decision to part ways with the gaming company is unrelated to the Paqueta case.

According to a previous article by The Sun, West Ham is thinking of suing the FA over their possible decision to give Paqueta a lifelong ban from playing football. The club is thinking of challenging the FA’s authority to impose a permanent ban on Paqueta by sending the FA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
