Brazil And Argentina Crashing Out Of World Cup 2026 As They Lose Qualifiers
In the most recent 2026 World Cup qualifying match, Argentina was defeated 2-1 by Colombia, while Brazil lost 1-0 to Paraguay, their fourth loss in five games.
After 20 minutes in Asuncion, Diego Gomez of Inter Miami gave Paraguay the victory as Brazil failed to muster a chance on goal in the first half.
Brazil’s starting lineup for the game included West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, Alisson, the goalkeeper for Liverpool, Bruno Guimaraes, the midfielder for Newcastle, and Rodrygo, Endrick, and Vinicius Jr. from Real Madrid.
Brazil, who have won five world championships, now sits sixth in the qualifying table with only three victories in their eight games.
Colombia’s James Rodriguez scored the winner from the penalty spot to defeat the reigning world champions, Argentina, who were without Lionel Messi. Rodriguez, now at Rayo Vallecano, crossed for Wolves’ Yerson Mosquera to score the opener in the 25th minute. Argentina levelled three minutes after the break, but a penalty was given after a video assistant referee review. Captain Rodriguez sent Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez the wrong way from the spot to score the 60th-minute winner. Argentina remain top of the 10-team table by two points from Colombia.
The top six teams automatically qualify after 18 rounds of fixtures, which carry on until September 2025.
In Asia’s World Cup qualifiers, Australia lost 1-0 at home to Bahrain, while Japan won 5-0 away to Bahrain. South Korea recorded their first win in World Cup 2026 qualifying, beating Oman 3-1.
