Antoine Griezmann Retires From International Football

Antoine Griezmann, the World Cup winner and forward for Atletico Madrid, has declared his retirement from international football.

In a video posted on social media on Monday, the Frenchman declared that it was “time for me to turn the page and make way for the next generation.”

In the Euro 2024 semifinals, Didier Deschamps’ team lost to eventual victors Spain, which was Griezmann’s final match for France.

The 33-year-old played for Les Bleus for ten years, making his debut in March 2014. He also scored 44 goals while playing 137 games for his country.

His international career reached its zenith when France won the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and became world champions for the first time since 1998.

Griezmann said in an online video:

“Today, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the French national team,”

“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn the page and make way for the new generation.

“Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege. Since March 2014 and until last September, I had the opportunity to experience incredible moments alongside exceptional teammates. We shared victories that will remain forever engraved in our memories.”

When France hosted Euro 2016, Griezmann’s national squad had a breakthrough competition. Griezmann, who played as a striker and scored six goals, was awarded the Golden Boot.

Griezmann and France lost 1-0 in extra time to Portugal in the tournament final, capping off a heartbreaking conclusion.

Two years after their devastating defeat at the Euros, France triumphed in the World Cup in Russia, with Griezmann playing a crucial part in his country’s victory.

Griezmann participated in every game of the competition, saving his greatest efforts for the elimination rounds, where he consistently assisted or scored goals.

The Atleti player assisted two more goals and scored from the penalty spot in the championship as France easily won over Croatia.

Griezmann was instructed to take on a deeper role in midfield as Kylian Mbappe took center stage, but he still contributed significantly to France’s success in tournament play.

Griezmann’s outstanding performances during the 2022 World Cup enabled France to advance to back-to-back finals, where they were tragically defeated by Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a penalty shootout.

Griezmann is fourth among men’s all-time scorers from his ten years on the international scene; only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram have made more appearances than him.
