The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has signed a $30 million grant agreement with the UAE to support forest communities in protecting and restoring forests. This is part of Ghana’s efforts to meet biodiversity and climate goals under the Resilient Ghana Package launched at COP28 in Dubai, following the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP) initiated at COP27. The package aims to stop forest loss, promote restoration, and support sustainable development.
The Resilient Ghana Package, launched in Dubai, aims to target deforestation and biodiversity loss by 2030. The UAE, the COP28 Presidency, has committed to investing 30 million Ghana Cedis (US$30,000,000) to support Ghana’s efforts.
The package focuses on nature-based industrialisation and rural development, future-fit green jobs and livelihoods, and scaling climate ambition.
On September 27, 2024, Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, and UAE Minister for Climate Change and Environment, H.E Dr. Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, signed a Letter of Intent to provide up to US$30,000,000 to implement the biodiversity and climate objectives of the Resilient Ghana Package and REDD+ Strategies.
The funds will support programs ranging from targeted interventions within specific geographic landscapes in Ghana to wider ambitions for national-level efforts.
The partnership between the two countries reflects the UAE’s focus on global biodiversity, climate, and development goals, and the UAE Consensus, which calls for the ending and reversal of deforestation by 2030.
