Galamseyers Take Over Konongo GRIDCo Site

Parts of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions’ electricity supplies are seriously threatened by illegal mining, or galamsey, in Konongo, Ashanti Region.

The concession owned by Northern Ashanti Mines, which contains important GRIDCo substation pylons, has been overrun by galamseyers, endangering vital infrastructure.

Due to the invasion of illegal miners, the GRIDCo substation, which is situated within the operational zone of Northern Ashanti Mines, is currently in risk.

There are worries about possible power outages that could impact Konongo Township and the surrounding areas since a number of pylons that support the electricity grid have been affected.

Illegal mining operations continue in the region despite the mine’s security task force’s persistent efforts.

The mining firm has voiced its dissatisfaction, noting unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issue by involving local security organizations including the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).

The threat increased lately when armed persons attacked the security task force of the mining firm, inflicting injuries and property damage.

This violent altercation serves as a reminder of the constant difficulties the company faces in protecting its activities and the electrical infrastructure in the area.

According to intelligence, there will be another attack on the mine on Thursday, October 10. As a result, the corporation is afraid that its security staff and the galamseyers may clash.

The situation continues to jeopardize mining operations and the stability of power supply in the affected areas.
