The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other officials are scheduled to meet with the Federation Of International Football Association (FIFA) to explore the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Ghana’s domestic football tournaments.
FIFA’s whole VAR project team will attend the two-day meeting, which is set for October 31 and November 1, 2024, in Accra.
A crucial component of FIFA’s Implementation Assessment Approval Program (IAAP), which all Member Associations (MAs) must finish in order to implement VAR technology, is the “VAR kick-off meeting.”
Representatives from FIFA and GFA will go over all the details of the VAR project and evaluate what is required to make it a success at the meeting. This conference will start the formal VAR implementation process for Ghana’s leagues, provided FIFA gives its approval.

On October 30, 2024, the FIFA team—which includes specialists Michael Bailey and Inokuchi Takaaki—will land in Ghana. They will offer direction on the procedures and technologies related to VAR.
A group of senior officials, including Alex Kotey (Head of Referees and VAR Team Leader), Emmanuel Aglago (VAR Instructor), Marian Mensah (Head of Legal Affairs), Francis Adu (Head of IT), Julius Emunah (Head of Competitions), Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe (Head of PR and Strategy), and Christine Ziga (Chairperson of the Referees Committee)., will be led by General Secretary Prosper Harisson Addo (Esq.) on behalf of the GFA.
To guarantee that all parties involved are adequately equipped to handle the technical and administrative requirements of putting VAR into practice, FIFA mandates that the referee instructor, principal venue media officer, and VAR project leader attend.
The GFA’s decision to use VAR shows its dedication to raising officiating quality and harmonizing with international norms. It is anticipated that this meeting would establish the foundation for the effective integration of VAR technology into Ghanaian football.
