Goals from Alex Berenguer and Gorka Guruzeta gave Athletic Club a historic victory at the San Mames, costing Real Madrid vital points in the Liga title chase.
Shortly after halftime, Berenguer gave the home team the lead when Inaki Williams’ brilliant play cut out Real Madrid’s defense with a dangerous cross, and Berenguer then stabbed home Thibault Courtois’ block.
In the 67th minute, while clearing a Rodrygo free-kick, Julen Agirrezabala collided with Antonio Rudiger in the box, giving Real Madrid a chance to tie the score. Kylian Mbappe would go on to score, but Agirrezabala saved with a dive to his left in a moment of redemption for the Athletic Club goalie.
Jude Bellingham appeared to have saved a point for the away team by tucking home a parried Mbappe effort on goal, but Real Madrid equalized.
But immediately after, Gorka Guruzeta, a substitute, dispossessed Federico Valverde and tapped past Courtois in the 80th minute, causing Real Madrid to lose all three points for the second time this season due to a costly error.
On Sunday, December 8, Athletic Club will play Villarreal in another difficult test before traveling to play Fenerbahce in the Europa League. Real Madrid will be traveling once more this weekend as they play Girona before traveling to Italy to play Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League.
