The Most Valuable Player title in Major League Soccer went to the Argentine sensation Lionel Messi.
Before his team was defeated in the opening round of the MLS Cup play-offs in November, the former Barcelona and Paris-St-Germain forward helped Inter Miami reach a record regular season points total.
The 37-year-old scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists, good for a league-high 36 goal total.
Messi only made 19 regular season and two playoff appearances for Miami this year due to injury, but he still received the honor.
Players, club technical staff, and journalists vote for the league’s MVP. Cucho Hernandez of the Colombus Crew received 33.7% of the vote, while Messi received 38.43%.
Robbie Keane of the Republic of Ireland, David Villa of Spain, and former United States player Donavon have all previously received the honor, which is formally known as the Landon Donovan MLS MVP.
