Black Queens Welcome Kim Björkegren As New Head Coach

The next head coach of Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, is Swedish coach Kim Björkegren.

Having led elite clubs in Sweden, Cyprus, China, and the US, Björkegren, 43, has a wealth of expertise.

He succeeds Nora Hauptle, who is now the coach of Zambia after leading the Black Queens to qualification for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

“In a career covering 18 years, Kim, now a UEFA License A Coach, has gained significant experience and success coaching in Sweden and other countries. Kim’s successes include his winning the Cyprus top Women’s league with Apollon Ladies as well as the Damallsvenskan (Swedish Women’s top league) with Linkopings FC. In the 2020-2021 season, he was adjudged the Coach of the season in Cyprus”, the Ghana Football Association announced.

The competition will take place between July 5 and July 26, 2025.

Charles Sampson and Anita Wiredu are assistant coaches on Björkegren’s  technical staff.

The team’s athletic coach is Enoch Jordan Daitey of Accra Hearts of Oak, and the goalkeeper coach is Nassamu Yakubu.

Having coached women’s football for seven years, Björkegren has had considerable success, winning league titles with Linköpings FC in Sweden and Apollon Ladies in Cyprus.

His immediate task at the forthcoming Women’s AFCON is to guide Ghana past the group stages, something the squad was unable to accomplish in the 2018 competition.
