Burkina Faso, Mali, And Niger Announce Official Exit From ECOWAS

Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger have formally withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with effect from today, Wednesday.

The ECOWAS Commission highlighted its dedication to regional cooperation and provided transitional measures to minimize inconveniences for businesses and individuals during this time in a news release issued on January 29.

Given that Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have been integral members of ECOWAS’ integration program, their resignation signifies a change in the regional dynamics of West Africa.

Notwithstanding their departure, ECOWAS reiterated its commitment to keeping the lines of communication and cooperation open with these nations in the future.

ECOWAS instructed member nations and pertinent authorities to implement measures to reduce potential disruptions in order to guarantee continuity and minimize negative effects.

Until further notice, ECOWAS advised member nations to accept national passports and identity cards with the ECOWAS insignia that belong to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger nationals.

The regional bloc added that the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies will continue to benefit goods and services coming from the three nations, guaranteeing continuous trade flows.

In accordance with current procedures, nationals of the three countries will also continue to have the freedom to travel, live, and establish themselves anywhere in ECOWAS territory without a visa.

The Commission stated that these arrangements will remain in effect until a comprehensive framework for future engagement with the three countries is determined by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
