The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has commenced maintenance work on its gas pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana, a move that is expected to impact gas supply and power generation in Ghana.
The maintenance, scheduled from February 5 to March 2, 2025, involves cleaning the pipeline—also known as “Pigging”—and replacing subsea equipment.
According to a statement from WAPCo, gas supply to thermal plants in Tema from Nigeria, as well as reverse gas transportation from Takoradi to Tema, will be curtailed during this period. As a result, thermal plants in Tema that rely on natural gas for operation will face shutdowns.
To minimize disruptions to power supply, stakeholders in the energy sector, led by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, have secured alternative fuel sources, including liquid fuel, for some power plants that have the capacity to switch fuels. However, authorities warn that challenges in electricity supply may still arise.
- GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that they are working around the clock to mitigate any potential power shortages and have urged citizens to stay informed through official communications.
