Fire Outbreak Devastates ECG Warehouse In Cape Coast

Electrical cables valued at thousands of cedis were damaged Wednesday by a fire breakout at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warehouse in Cape Coast.

No deaths were reported, however about 60 drums of 2x25mm aluminum electrical cables were damaged.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified, according to fire officials. In the Central Region, it took about four hours for members of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to put out the fire.

The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, stated that the GNFS responded to a distress call at 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday (February 19), reporting a fire at the ECG warehouse.

He said the quick intervention of GNFS personnel prevented the warehouse from being completely destroyed.

DOIII Hudu added that firefighters from the regional headquarters quickly called for reinforcement from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station to contain the fire.

By using smart tactics, the firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to the main warehouse and nearby houses. Approximately 8:00 p.m., following hours of vigorous firefighting, the fire was totally put out.

ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah, the GNFS’s Central Regional Commander, who was on the site, advised establishments and companies to put fire safety first, particularly in the dry season.
