At Sabon Zongo in the Ashanti region’s Asokore Mampong Municipality, more than 70 craftspeople face the possibility of being forced to relocate after portions of their workshops were demolished early on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
The artisans who are being forced to leave lament that the demolition exercise has put their livelihoods in jeopardy.
A court ruling states that Margaret Sanaa, who has been granted custody of the land by five people, completed the exercise.
The Golden Stool is located on the aforementioned plot of land, and the craftspeople claim to have been working there for more than 40 years.
Expressing their displeasure to Citi News, the artisans lamented that they were not given prior notice of the evacuation. Although they admit the piece of land is not theirs, their frustration stems from the fact that they were not given time to vacate the place.
They are thus calling for urgent intervention to ensure that they are given time to vacate the land.
“They didn’t give us any notice before they came to destroy our things. We had a lot of machines and we were not given time to remove them. We are pleading for there to be orderliness,” one artisan lamented.
