Hearts of Oak captain Benjamin Asare handed maiden Ghana call up for 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has earned his first-ever call-up to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Asare, who joined the Phobians before the start of the campaign has been in excellent form, earning him a place in the 23-man squad released on Friday morning by head coach Otto Addo.

The 32-year-old has been pivotal for the Ghanaian giants, who currently sit third in the Ghana Premier League campaign. Asare has made 18 appearances in the Ghanaian top-flight, conceding just seven goals and keeping an impressive twelve clean sheet.

Asare has been decisive for Hearts of Oak, making several crucial saves to salvage the club from defeats. His impressive performance caught the attention of the Black Stars technical team, necessitating for his inclusion for the two upcoming matches.

The former Great Olympics shot stopper will compete for a starting role with already established Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott.

The experienced goalkeeper joins Nations FC defender Razak Simpson, and Medeama’s Kamaradini Mamudu as the only local players to have made the cut for the upcoming qualifying games.

Ghana will play host to Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on March 24, 2024.

The Black Stars, currently second in Group I with nine points, level with leaders Comoros, must secure maximum points to strengthen their qualification bid.
